I had the opportunity to see M. Night Shyamalan's brilliant movie The Village this weekend. I'm a huge Shymalan fan as it is, but I have to say, I think this is the best movie I've ever seen.
Early on, we're introduced to a character named Ivy Walker. Ivy is a blind teenager who is the daughter of the settlement's founder. Despite her sightlessness, she navigates the fields and houses quite well. In one scene, she is racing another teen named Noah Percy. They finally reach an outcropping of rocks, when Ivy realizes that there is someone sitting there. She recognizes Lucius Hunt "by his color", and says so. Ivy goes on to say how that she recognizes certain people "by their color".
How can she do this if she is blind?
Well, the 6th chakra, also known as the third eye chakra or brow chakra, is an energy center situated between the eyes. The 6th chakra is the realm of clairvoyance or "clear seeing", which is also known as "second sight". This is a seeing beyond that of the natural sense of eyesight. While Ivy doesn't mention the word aura, it seems clear that this is what she is describing.
Auras are luminous egg-shaped cloud of pulsing energy that surrounds the human body. It extends out from the body about six feet in all directions, and is made up of concentric bands or layers of colored light that travel in patterns around the body. Those with strong constitutions and of good health will have strong colors in their aura. Those who are withdrawn or ill may have washed-out pastels in their aura, or dark, muddy colors. In her book What Color is Your Aura?, Dr. Barbara Bowers theorized that there are 14 aura colors among humanity, and each correspond with a particular personality pattern. Dr. Doreen Virtue has indentified the meanings of aura colors in terms of healing, especially as they relate to angels. Other authors and healers have their own take on aura colors and what each means.
I was excited to see Ivy's recognition of the colors surrounding her friends, because it shows how the third eye operates in a realm beyond the physical--a realm just as real as the 5 senses. Considering the movie themes of M. Night Shyamalan, I'm not surprised that this talented writer and director has a solid grasp on the realm of the sixth sense.
